Joshua's Story

This is a client that Joyce worked with in Vancouver, that inspired us and reaffirmed our belief in a holistic approach to fitness.

When Joshua started his journey, he was at his heaviest—164 kg with a body fat percentage of 42%. A father of three, Joshua was battling severe health issues, including a liver condition that was dangerously close to turning cancerous and making him diabetic. He had already suffered a cardiac arrest, and after waking up in a hospital bed, fighting for his life, he knew it was time for a drastic change. He wanted to see his kids grow and refused to die before 40.

Joshua was deeply motivated by his desire to reclaim his health for his children. The emotional and physical weight he carried was not just about the numbers on the scale; it was the fear of not being there for his family, the guilt of how he had treated his body, and the despair of thinking it was too late.

Working closely with Joyce and others, Joshua discovered that this journey wasn’t just about shedding weight. It was about redefining how he viewed himself—both physically and mentally. A  program was built around a holistic approach, which not only helped him lose weight but also rebuilt his emotional well-being, self-confidence, and relationship with his body.

The Physical Transformation

Joshua initially set the goal to shed his excess weight, improve his heart health, and reverse his liver condition. Through a carefully structured program that combined metabolic interval training, mobility work, and functional strength exercises, Joshua began to see gradual, but powerful, changes.

He started in group workouts where he felt supported and motivated by others. Although initially self-conscious, Joshua’s confidence grew as he was encouraged to demonstrate exercises in class, and he eventually shared his story with his peers, their overwhelming reaction was to express their support and tell him that he inspired then to be better everyday. He later reflected that this was a pivotal moment in his journey. The tears he shed that day weren’t just of relief but of recognition: he had truly begun transforming inside and out.

Throughout the process, he worked on his mobility and cardio-respiratory fitness, focusing on exercises that challenged his body safely yet effectively. From dynamic warm-ups and core stability drills to high-intensity interval training, and kickboxing classes tailored to his fitness level, Joshua embraced the physical challenge with courage. His strength, endurance, and agility grew week by week, and so did his determination to push further.

Within a year, Joshua had shed an incredible 73 kg (162 lbs), bringing his weight down to 90 kg (198 lbs) with just 10% body fat. But the transformation didn’t stop at the physical level. Joshua’s liver condition completely reversed, he was no longer at risk of diabetes, and he felt fitter and more capable than ever—running 5k and 10k races, climbing mountains, and living a life of vitality.

Emotional and Mental Empowerment

Joshua’s transformation wasn’t just about weight loss—it was about reclaiming his life in every aspect. He didn’t just focus on his physical progress. He worked closely on emotional intelligence, the studio helping him develop resilience and self-compassion. The mindset coaching helped Joshua silence the negative inner dialogue that had plagued him for years.

He learned to replace self-doubt with self-empowerment. Encouraged to adopt new habits of positive thinking, Joshua embraced the idea that he was worth the effort and investment in his own health. The psychological growth he experienced mirrored the physical transformation.

Through cognitive and behavioral shifts, Joshua also rebuilt his relationships with those around him. He became a more confident father, someone who could enjoy meaningful activities with his children, setting a strong, healthy example for them to follow. His family life transformed as much as his body did. The laughter, the energy, the zest for life returned—and this wasn’t just a temporary fix; it was sustainable, lifelong change.

What sets Joshua’s story apart isn’t just the dramatic weight loss but the deeply transformative process that guided him from where he was to where he is now. A process that Alchemy also espouses - Connected Fitness Process works across three phases: Recharge, Rebuild, and Revitalise.

The Recharge phase, helped Joshua address his emotional and mental barriers. Through habit and behavior change techniques, as well as stress and anxiety management, Joshua began to reshape his internal dialogue. This phase also introduced foundational mobility work, functional strength exercises, and early-stage cardio-respiratory training.

As Joshua progressed into the Rebuild phase, he ramped up the intensity with metabolic interval training, plyometric drills, and more advanced functional strength exercises. He was also guided  through nutrition changes that replaced old habits with nourishing, balanced choices—ensuring that his body was fueled for optimal performance and recovery.

In the final Revitalise phase, he incorporated more advanced recovery techniques, where activations mobilisation and flexibility became habits in order to maintain muscle health and prevent injury. By the end of the year, Joshua was not only physically transformed but emotionally and mentally revitalised.

He continues to push himself in fitness, aiming to take his kickboxing to a whole new level as well as  becoming an instructor  himself and share his story and new found vitality with others who need hope and guidance on their own journeys.

Kate's Journey

Helping Kate become Fit for Life Through Cognitive Empowerment

When my client Kate first came to me, she was struggling with negative thought patterns that sabotaged her health and fitness goals. Although she genuinely wanted to adopt fitter habits, her inner dialogue held her back.

Kate thought she was "too old" to see results, felt guilty taking time for herself, and had inner critiques about her body that sapped motivation. She was ready to give up.

I knew cognitive empowerment techniques could help transform Kate's mindset. We identified her limiting beliefs and systematically countered them with more empowering perspectives.

I had Kate look for evidence that contradicted thoughts like "I'll never lose weight." She listened to affirmations on self-care. We replaced phrases like "I don't deserve this" with "I am worth investing in."

Within weeks, Kate's self-talk became more positive, and she believed change was possible. She had less decision fatigue and through our workouts, gained stamina and mobility she thought was impossible before.

By uncovering - then upgrading - her thoughts, Kate developed grit and confidence. She turned fitness and healthy eating into a self-care ritual. She could see that in fact she didn’t need to lose weight, she just had to tone up a little and feel stronger inside and out. Her outlook fuelled sustainable habits so she could pursue longevity and joy - not instant results.

Now, Kate greets each day motivated, focused and eager to nourish her body, mind and spirit. She is empowered, energized and truly fit for life!

She has started running again, plays badminton with the boys, and has even joined the local climbing club.

Cognitive therapy provided the mindset reset Kate required to align her actions with her aspirations.

Her story shows the power our thoughts have, both to limit and uplift us.

The limits we impose on ourselves are rarely actual limits - we have so much more potential than we realize.

With self-compassion and transformed thinking, we can break through barriers, thrive and take ownership of our own unique journey through life.

Siggy's Reset

A JOURNEY OF STRENGTH, RESILIENCE AND INSPIRATION.

In my coaching experience, certain clients truly stand out, showcasing the incredible power of human determination.

Meet Siggy, a 50-year-old father of two, whose life underwent an exceptional transformation driven by unwavering commitment, resilience, and a desire to redefine his limits.

I met Siggy through his older son, with whom I have been coaching to take his basketball to elite level. Siggy asked me if I would be willing to help him achieve his fitness goals and improve his strength and stability. After a visit with him to his physio to find out more about Siggy’s unique challenges, I said I would be happy to work with him on the basis that he continually communicates with me on how he is feeling and highlights any problems he is encountering. Siggy is a 50-year-old father of two teenage sons, the eldest at 15 is an international basketball athlete (we have just achieved this recently), the youngest has severe autism. Siggy and his wife like many other devoted parents want the best for their boys. As any busy parents will know bringing up children presents us with not only immense joy and satisfaction but also unique challenges and stresses.

Siggy is no different.

Siggy's story begins with a childhood encounter with the Polio virus in Pakistan at the tender age of 18 months. Despite the challenges presented by a left leg weakened by the virus, Siggy's spirit remained unbroken. His journey brought him to the UK, where over the years the left leg has deteriorated to the point where he has very little muscle or function in the leg, this has caused many other issues with the nervous system and bio-mechanical imbalances among various additional challenges. Battling through the complexities of Polio's aftermath, Siggy found solace in staying active, hitting the gym, and confronting the everyday challenges of parenthood as well as harbouring high hopes for his own sporting journey.

His dream?

To play international wheelchair rugby for Scotland and elevate his paddle tennis game. The obstacles were formidable — reduced mobility, bio-mechanical imbalances, asthma, and the daily grind of physio and massage therapy - but Siggy's determination became the cornerstone of a remarkable transformation.

As a health, fitness, and wellness coach, my role extended beyond physical training. We embarked on a holistic journey addressing Siggy's challenges as a parent and an athlete. From the intricacies of day-to-day parenting to adapting exercises for the wheelchair, kneeling and using the Swiss ball to enhance proprioception and core stability, making time for self care, nutrition, mindset, habit change, addressing when to slow down and rest (de-load) relieving stress on body and mind. We confronted limiting beliefs, challenging the negative thoughts Siggy had around not believing he could reset some of his bio-mechanical imbalances and neuromuscular problems by instilling a mindset of gradual progress.

The path wasn't without its hurdles. We tackled habit changes, debunking the myth that wheelchair life necessitates shortcuts. Flexibility, mobility, and good form took precedence over convenience, ushering in a new era of self-care, nutrition, and positive habits. Siggy embraced the process, understanding that training hard isn't about overtraining but about sustainable progress.

Neuromuscular exercises have been pivotal in the process of reconnecting Siggy with his body's incredible potential. Strength and cardio workouts were tailored to enhance power, speed, and overall fitness. Simultaneously, a nutritional shift aimed at wholesome, nourishing foods added fuel to his revitalised journey.

Today, Siggy not only embodies strength and fitness and wellness, he has become an inspiration to those around him. He is now representing his tennis club playing wheelchair paddle tennis for their team, He has been asked if he is interested in playing at International Tennis Federation(ITF)level in the near future, and has been extended an invitation to train with the national wheelchair rugby squad. This bears testament to his newfound prowess. Beyond the physical transformation, Siggy's family life has blossomed into a more rewarding experience.

Working with Siggy over the last 5 months has been nothing short of inspirational. He is full of vigour and energy, a beacon of resilience and hope. His journey teaches us that no challenge is insurmountable with the right mindset, guidance, and an unwavering spirit. Siggy's reset is not just a personal triumph; it's a source of inspiration for everyone aiming to overcome life's obstacles and emerge stronger on the other side.

Ikigai

A Japanese concept meaning "reason for being"
a short story...

It represents having a direction or purpose in life that makes you feel fulfilled, impassioned and gives your life meaning.

Finding your Ikigai is deeply personal - it means discovering your life purpose and why you get up in the morning. It's the intersection of who you are, what you're skilled at, what the world needs, and what you love. Ikigai brings together the personal, professional, and social in a fulfilling vocation. It provides direction, motivation, and joy in the work you do daily.

Discovering your Ikigai helps you thrive!

I came across a fantastic example of one person’s Ikigai recently when I had the pleasure in meeting a fantastic guy called Hasan. I had seen Hasan multiple times before, on the basketball court at our local sports centre, whilst my son and I were coaching our basketball athletes. Hasan was there helping his own son, by passing on his own knowledge and experience of the sport that they are both passionate about.

During our discussion Hasan was really animated about the game of basketball, but the thing that resonated even more with me was his love for his son and his dedication to helping him and others on their journey to unlocking their potential. Near the end of the discussion, I invited both him and his son to come train alongside our athlete’s, he looked at me a bit shocked that the invite was for both of them, then his eyes lit up as he said they would love to come along (his son was taking part in the discussion too, he was also very happy with this outcome).

Their first training session was yesterday.

Hassan turned up to find himself faced with 3 elite international athletes.

Did this faze him? Yes absolutely!

Did this Stop him? Absolutely not!

This dad in his mid-forties stepped forward to face the challenge with a smile on his face and a spring in his step (this lasted at least 10 minutes).

During the session Hasan, pushed himself out of his comfort zone, he ran, he sweated, he was a fantastic member of our team. The boys totally accepted him as part of the team because his contribution to the session was invaluable. He was a great leader, he lead by example, his effort, enthusiasm and vigour, were infectious.

As I looked across at Hasan’s son at the conclusion of the session, I could see the pride in his eyes, it was obvious how much his dad stepping out of his comfort zone to support him meant to him.

I think yesterday Hasan presented a perfect example of his own personal Ikigai.

WHAT IS YOUR ‘IKIGAI’? I’d love to hear all about it message us!
